The US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly announced today its worldwide sales of Viagra, Pfizer's biggest-selling drug, have exceeded $1 billion, according to IQVIA, a global research company.
The sales of Viagra have doubled since the launch of the drug in late March 2017. The increase in Viagra sales is expected to continue over the next several years, as the US Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, with more than 30 million prescriptions for the drug in the first quarter.
"Viagra is a game-changer for millions of men suffering from erectile dysfunction," said John Lechleiter, CEO of the pharmaceutical company. "Our sales volume has surpassed $1 billion in the first half of this year. With the increased sales of Viagra, patients can expect to pay for themselves by the third quarter to fourth. We are very pleased with the progress that has been made, and look forward to continuing to deliver on our pledge to get the Viagra you need shipped to your door."
Viagra is the company's best-selling medication in the last 13 years, up 16 percent from the year ago. It ranks third in the group of medications for which there are currently available, followed by Cialis (up 22 percent) and Levitra (up 27 percent).
Viagra has been widely hailed as a miracle drug for many, but the pharmaceutical giant has made it clear in a recent interview withCNN,that it is not going to be able to compete with Cialis and Levitra. Sales of Cialis (sold as Levitra) have increased by 20 percent since the drug's introduction in late March, up 36 percent from the previous quarter, and down 11 percent from the previous year.
The increase in sales of Viagra has been attributed to a growing demand for the drug, which has made it popular with men in many parts of the world.
